This regal creature is Sonia, pictured here with her fifth calf. While black rhinos are generally solitary, the relationship between mother and calf is a particularly strong bond. Calves remain with their mothers for nearly two years until another sibling comes along. Poaching remains the single largest threat to the black rhino, whose numbers have dwindled to just 5,500. LEWA and Borana are home to 14% of Kenya’s black and southern white rhinos combined.
